FOR THE ATTENTION OF ALL HANDS

THIS IS A HEADS UP TO ALL COLLEGE BOUND CADETS REGARDING AN UPCOMING OPPORTUNITY FOR A FIRST HAND, UP CLOSE LOOK AT THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD ACADEMY.

Over the weekend of 11 February 2011, the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT will be hosting an open house for approximately 100 high school, college bound, (or thinking of going to college) students to visit the Academy. The Academy wants to significantly increase Sea Cadet participation this year. The weekend is paid for by the Academy; all except travel to and from. Here’s what’s going to happen:

Soon, NSCC will provide to all hands an informational brochure and application procedure for cadets to apply to attend an open house at the USCG Academy over the weekend of 11 Feb 2011. This will be posted to the 1 MC and provided to all Unit CO’s electronically via our NSCC chain of command.
FOR ALL CADETS… If you’re thinking about one of the service Academies, this is a great opportunity to see if the USCG Academy is for you…And if you’ve never thought about it, an even better opportunity to find out what you might be missing!
Interested cadets will first apply directly to the Academy. All cadets will be competing with high schools students from all across the nation.
For those accepted, cadets will travel on their own to the Academy. For those wishing to fly or travel by train (local Amtrak station in New London, CT), reporting instructions will be provided when known.
The venue is:
Friday is travel and report.
Each reporting cadet will be roomed with a hosting USCG cadet already attending the Academy. NSCC cadets will room two nights with the hosting Academy cadet.
Saturday is Leadership Conference and Orientation to the Academy, all day.
Saturday night hosted at the Academy
Sunday travel home.
The expected timeline is:
Sometime this month; NSCC will post an informational brochure and application form with instructions.
Applications to be submitted directly to the Academy, deadline will probably be sometime early January.
Acceptance notifications sent to NSCC cadets from the USCG Academy, mid January.
NSCC Cadets make travel arrangements.
10 February report.
11 February Orientation
12 February, return home

AGAIN, THIS IS JUST A HEADS UP NOTIFICATION FOR ALL CADETS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED SO THEY CAN MARK THEIR CALENDARS AND BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE OFFICIAL ADVERTISEMENT. SOME OF THIS MIGHT CHANGE BUT IT IS PRETTY CLOSE.

PREREQUISITES (AND THIS IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE):

OPEN TO ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS; FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, AND SENIORS.

IN GOOD ACADEMIC STANDING

If interested, mark your calendars; more to follow.
